KORE Group and INIA to organise a national conference to discuss innovations in Healthy and Active Ageing

A landmark national conference focused on safeguarding the rights of older persons in Malta will take place on November 28th, addressing pressing issues such as artificial intelligence (AI) companions and innovations in healthy ageing. Organised by the International Institute on Ageing United Nations – Malta (INIA) in collaboration with Healthmark, the event aims to explore the intersection of technology, health policies, and human rights.

With Malta’s population ageing rapidly, the need to protect older persons’ rights has become a national priority. The conference, entitled Safeguarding The Rights of Older Persons: Innovations in Healthy and Active Ageing, will bring together experts to discuss how technological advancements can support the well-being and independence of older individuals, while ensuring their human rights are respected.

A keynote address on AI companions will be delivered by Prof. Alexiei Dingli, an AI expert from the University of Malta. He will explore how AI technology can provide essential support and companionship to older persons without replacing human interactions. His talk will focus on how AI can contribute to improving the quality of life, independence, and mental well-being of older individuals.

International perspectives on active and healthy ageing will be shared by Lisa Warth, Chief of the Population Unit at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). Warth will discuss global best practices that keep ageing populations active and healthy, drawing on her experience with UNECE and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr. Mark-Anthony Vassallo, Consultant Geriatrician at the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing, will also present a keynote speech, focusing on the medical aspects of safeguarding the health and rights of older persons in Malta. He will discuss how healthcare strategies can be tailored to meet the specific needs of an ageing population.

Speaking about the significance of the conference, Charlotte Sant Portanier, CEO of Healthmark, said, “We are at a pivotal moment for the future of elderly care in Malta. This conference aims to foster meaningful dialogue among all stakeholders to ensure that older persons live with dignity, respect, and equal access to opportunities for healthy and active ageing.”

Marvin Formosa, Director of INIA, emphasised the importance of the event in addressing both local and global challenges. “By bringing together local and international experts, this conference allows us to examine global trends and apply them to Malta’s specific context. It’s an opportunity to address emerging challenges and capitalise on the opportunities presented by an ageing population,” he said.

The conference will be held on Thursday, November 28th, at Salini Resort from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. It is expected to attract professionals from various sectors, including healthcare, policymaking, and technology, all united in their commitment to enhancing the lives of Malta’s older citizens.
